Acropolis, Athens, Greece: Museum pieces found while escavating. These were earlier statues (probably from about 1300 BC) which were burned by the Persians and then buried, since they could not be thrown out, because that would show disrespect. Thereby, they survived where other statues did not when the Ottomans took over and sacked the city.
