Views of the Tyrolian town of Bolzano
statue to Walther von der Vogelweide the Meistersinger. Walther is one of the traditional competitors in the tale of the song contest at the Wartburg. He appears in medieval accounts and continues to be mentioned in more modern versions of the story such as that in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser. He is also named by Walter von Stolzing, the hero of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, as his poetic model.

we took a funicular up to a high ridge above Bolzano
from the top of the plateau we could see some of the Dolomites
we took a little train connecting the Tyrolean towns on the Alto Adige plateau
