Tuesday, Day 28, 2007

I woke up, and drove to Seward. Our hotel is another train called Train Wreck. It's 3 trains in a triangle. We talked to a person who was fileting fish, and went to an aquarium. There was a sea Lion getting fed and doing tricks. There were birds that dove deep in the water. The coolest thing was the octopus. It was huge, but could fit in a tiny hole. I won again in Dominoes and fell asleep at 11:00 sharp.

Got up this morning. Arthur and Natan had breakfast at Tito's while I took my pills at home on the porch in the glorious sunshine. After they came back, we took off for Seward -- seeing beautiful glaciers most of the way. On the way, we checked our promontory on the Turnagain Arm at milepost 13 of the Hope road. Much of the tide (but not all) was once again out of the cove. Amazing!

On to Seward, where we are staying in a railroad car again, this time right on the small-boat harbor. The railroad car is nicely done, and we're happy to once again have an indoor bathroom. Off we went to lunch at Ray's, which was excellent, as advertised, but a bit pricey. Then to the Alaska Sealife Center, which had marvelous displays of local fish, birds, and sea mammals, and very nice explanations of the ecology of the region.

We then took a drive to the Exit Glacier, called the Exit because it was the best way to leave the huge Harding icefield.

Wednesday, Day 29, 2007

I woke up, and went on an all day boat trip. We saw Orcas. One breached and one stuck his head out. We also saw Steller sea lions and a sea otter. I fell asleep and before that did a junior ranger quest. I woke up just in time for all you can eat dessert. I had 4 jellows that were huge. After jellow dinner, the ranger awarded me a junior ranger badge. The question were really hard, especially with 4, 5, and 6 foot waves knocking against our boat. I felt seasick and took Dramamine. I also had a headache so I took an aspirin. The waves were caused by a hurricane. There were Dall's porpises in front of the boat keep up with our very fast boat. You could see them under water. We came back. I had a huge ice-cream for desert, played a very late family game of O-dear which of course I won, and went to bed very late.

Wednesday, 8/29/2007

Up this morning for a pretty yucky bagel at a cute shop. Shopped a bit and got an i-pod T-shirt for Nils. Boarded our boat, the Kenai Star.

It was fantastic. The skies were clear blue and the sun was warm, though the air was very coot. A perfect day.

Arthur and I took some dramamine at the start. Natan took some later when the movement was getting to him.

We saw orcas! One breached, and one stood on its tail to look us over. We saw a whole bunch of Stellar Sea Lions sunning themselves on an island. For a while we were tracked by 3 or 4 Dall's porpoises that kept racing the boat and swimming over and under the bow wave. I really thought they'd get crushed by the hull, but they knew what they were doing and were playing with us.

We also saw a sea otter. Some on the boat saw a humpback whale, but I missed it. the ranger aboard the boat said that the humpback was probably trying to escape from the hunting orcas. We went up the Kenai Fjords and saw one of the glaciers calving into the fjord.

Natan did a lot of work on the junior ranger program and won his badge in a ceremony the ranger held on the ship.

They fed us a great all-you-can-eat lunch, where Natan ate all-you-can-eat dessets.

Home pretty late. We found an internet cafe to check our email and pre-board for our flight tomorrow from Anchorage to Seattle. then we played a game of Oh Dear, which Natan won, naturally. I think he's won every family game we've played. It's not fair! To sleep for a very early start tomorrow.
