In August, 2004, Arthur and Martha Luehrmann and Aron Cowen went on the Lewis and Clark Expedition Of Discovery route, from Philadelphia to St. Louis, up the Missouri River through Missouri, Nebraska, and the Dakotas, west on the Missouri River through Montana to the source of the Missouri at Three Forks, two side trips to visit Jenifer Wise and Franci McMahon at their ranch in Boulder, MT, and to Yellowstone Park,.through the Bitterroot Mountains, down the Clearwater, Snake, and Columbia Rivers to Fort Clatsop on the Oregon coast.

Of course, the west may have been unknown territory to Americans and Europeans, but it was well known to the Indian tribes that lived there. Before the European's smallpox wiped many of them out, the Indians had thriving communities with well-established trade routes.
