Feeling a little better. Drove up across a long bridge over the Columbia and its mud flats to Cape Disappointment, which has a wonderful old lighthouse and is right on the great Pacific Ocean. We saw the ocean! |

Tuesday, August 31th, 2004 Day 30
Dear Journal, Today we woke up, breakfast, and drove to the salt works where L+C made 2 bushels of salt. Then we had lunch and went to some old friends of Tie_Dye and Bop, played dominoes and had dinner with them. After that, The man and I talked engineering for a while, we said goodbye, and went to our hotel, where we crashed instantly. Aron |

Drove to Seaside, Oregon, to see the town and the Expedition's salt boiling works. They built up fire pits with stones and boiled buckets of seawater to get salt to preserve their food. |

Tuesday, August 31, 2004 (Continued)
We drove down the coast and had lunch at Tillamook, Oregon. Then we drove on down to Eugene, Oregon, to the Phoenix motel, and then drove to Bill and Gene Peckham's house. Bill was off on a meeting in Seattle about some bridges and roads that he is consulting on, but will join us for dinner later. Gene, Sheila, Aron, Bop, and I played a game of dominoes, since it was Gene and Bill who taught us the game in the first place. The Peckhams took us all to a super dinner at Marché in Eugene, and drove back to Gene and Bill's house to pick up our things. Aron was much taken with Bill, and in awe of Bill being an engineer who designed bridges and roads and building. The two of them pored over the Tacoma Bridge disaster and how that radically changed bridge design. |
