Dear Journal, Today we woke up, had breakfast, and drove to the confluence of the snake and the Mighty Columbia! Then we went to a reproduction of stone-henge, which was really intresting, even though I had trouble understanding it. After that, we went to a place where we could see all four volcanoes-Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Ranier, all of which are “not dormant”. Then we went to a museum about the gorge shaped by a lava flow and a giant flood/tital wave, had dinner, and fell asleep. Aron |

Then drove to Stonehenge near Goldendale, Washington. It is a memorial to local soldiers who died in WW I, and is alleged to be a direct replica of the Stonehenge in England, complete with stone angles to forecast eclipses, equinoxes, solstices, etc. |

We then drove to Goldendale and up to a lookout where you could see the 4 main volcanoes of the area: Mt. Adams, Washington, Mt. Hood, Oregon, Mt. St. Helens, Washington, and Mt. Rainier, Washington. Mt. Rainier only looks like a cloud on the horizon. Mt. Adams was the closest. |

Drove to our hotel and left our stuff and rushed to the science center in The Dalles. It was not as interactive and creative as I had hoped for, but had a good video and exhibit on the way the Columbia Gorge was formed. First, active volcanoes laid down great lava beds, some of them 2,000 feet thick. The early Columbia river etched a path through the lava to the ocean. Ice Ages came and dammed up the Columbia with ice, forming huge lakes, some of them as large as some of the Great Lakes. When the thaws came, the ice dams broke up, sending immense floods of water, ice, and boulders careening out to the ocean and scraping the gorge out. This happened repeatedly, leaving the gorge as we see it today. The science center also had an excellent exhibit of the life and culture and history of The Dalles area. Home to our motel, and a much enjoyed swim and hot tub. Our motel had high-speed internet, so Arthur checked his email and paid bills, and I checked my email and got rid of umpteen junkmails. Dinner at a wonderful family restaurant called Cousins, and so to bed. |
