Arthur and Aron had breakfast while I worked on photos and email. We drove along the Columbia to Bonneville Dam. At the dam were fabulous exhibits on the makings of the Columbia Gorge, the building of the dam, and the fish in the Columbia. There were long fish ladders where you could watch huge fish, mostly steelhead trout, but also salmon, coming up the fish ladders. They even had windows in the visitor's center where you could watch the fish climb the ladders from under water! The dam also had a great exhibit on generating power and how it is done, which really interested Aron. |

Monday, August 30th, 2004 (Day 29)
Dear Journal, Today we woke up, had breakfast, and went to the Bonneville Dam, where we saw some ingenious fish ladders from both above and through a glass panel looking into the water. The dam, as it turned out, had all of its gates open, which was fairly strange. Then we picked up Gran, had lunch, dumped our stuff, took a bus to another bus, which took us to fort Clatsop, where we saw 2 talks, one about old “medicine”, the other about the flintlock. After that, we had dinner, watched A Bug's Life, and went to sleep. Aron |

On to the Portland airport to pick up Sheila (Gran) Cowen. On the way, a brief stop to see the Multnomah Falls. We arrived at the airport just when Sheila was getting off the plane - great timing after a continent-wide drive! |

We all drove to our Comfort Inn motel in Astoria, Oregon, quickly unpacked, and took off for Fort Clatsop. The actual fort is very small, only 50 feet by 50 feet, where they housed 33 people, including the Captains, Sacagawea, Cherbonneau, Pompey, York, and 27 members of the permanent expedition. The expedition was here for 96 days in the winter of 1805-6, during which the sun shone only 6 days, but when we went there was bright sunshine. A guy dressed in the garb of the times did a very good talk on the medicines and surgical practices of the Lewis and Clark times, and then a lady ranger dressed as an expeditionary member gave a talk and display of the firearms of the time. Back home, Arthur and Aron and Sheila went to dinner. I stayed home, feeling much worse with my sore throat, headache whenever I coughed, and woozy. Arthur said they had a great salmon and sturgeon dinner, and brought me a pint of onion soup and some medicine. The soup helped, and the medicine let me sleep soundly. |
